About NSS (National Service Scheme)
The National Service Scheme, a permanent student youth programme had been implemented in Educational Institutions with financial assistance from the Central and State Governments in the ratio 7:5 from the year 1969 and the same has now been included in the Central Sector Schemes with 100% grants from Government of India.
The motto of NSS is Not Me But You. The overall objective is Development of Personality of Student Youth through Community Service.
A wide range of activities under this programme aim at inculcating positive values, developing leadership qualities, national integration & social harmony, promoting healthy life styles, enhancing employability skills etc. These activities are carried out under two major areas namely, Regular and Special Camping Programmes.
The NSS Volunteers and Programme Functionaries involve themselves under Regular Activities and Special Camping Programmes in order to achieve the objectives of the Scheme.
The NSS Badge Proud to Serve the Nation:
All the youth volunteers who opt to serve the nation through the NSS led community service wear the NSS badge with pride and a sense of responsibility towards helping needy. The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the 24 hours of a the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation round the clock i.e. for 24 hours.
Red colour in the badge signifies energy and spirit displayed by the NSS volunteers.
The Blue colour signifies the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of the mankind.
Benefits of Being a NSS Volunteer:
A NSS volunteer who takes part in the community service programme would either be a college level or a senior secondary level student. Being an active member these student volunteers would have the exposure and experience to be the following:
NSS Regular Activities:
Under this, students undertake various programmes in the adopted villages, colleges campus, public places and urban slums during weekend or after college hours.
The regular activities planned for students should aim to:-
- understand themselves and the community
- promote Leadership qualities
- work with non-student yoputh to understand the reality of life
- develop a sense of social and civiv responsibility
- increase the capacity of critical thinking and scientific / democratic attitudeprovide right information on higher education and employment opportunities
As per GOT guidelines, the Volunteers should be involved in NSS activities for 120 hours in a year and 240 hours in two consecutive years.

Our NPR Polytechnic college started the NSS Programme on 1st August 2009 was a remarkable day in the academic year 2009-2010 under the guidance of National Service Scheme, Directorate of Technical Education. We successfully conduct the NSS Regular Activities like Personality Development Programme, Carrier Guidance Programme, etc., and Conduct the special camp every year for Community development in rural areas villages. Our NSS volunteers are fully involved to participate the programme and Camp activities.
